What causes scabies?

Scabies is caused by infestation with the itch mite, which is scientifically known as Sarcoptes scabiei. This microscopic parasite burrows into the upper layer of the skin, leading to intense itching and a rash, particularly in areas where the skin folds. The condition is contagious and spreads through close contact with an infected person, as well as through sharing clothing or bedding.
